My name is Karen Sole and I am excited to share a bit about myself and my experiences. As a half-Japanese person raised in America, my connection to Japan has always been deeply rooted in my identity. This connection led me to my decision to study abroad in Japan, despite my initial uncertainties about its impact on my career.
However, my time at the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU), completely dissolved those uncertainties. I am currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science to become a physical therapist. I am passionate about both the exercise science world and Japan. I am excited to explore how I can incorporate my love for Japan into my career.
I am deeply passionate about the Japanese language and culture as it is deeply rooted as part of my identity.
My interest in Japan was further ignited during my time abroad at JCMU. I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the Japanese language and culture like never before. From participating in cultural activities to building friendships with fellow students who shared my passion for Japan, I cherished every moment. One of my favorite memories was with a local resident I met through my volunteer work in the English classes provided at JCMU. He was training to be a tour guide at Hikone Castle and generously showed me around Hikone during cherry blossom season. Discovering hidden spots and learning about Hikone’s history enriched my experience and deepened my connection to Japanese culture.
Looking ahead, my goal is to bridge my two passions by finding opportunities to work in Japan while continuing my career in physical therapy. I believe that by combining my cultural background and future career in physical therapy, I can make a positive contribution to both communities.
I am eternally grateful for my experience in Japan and am excited about all the opportunities that lie ahead. I am committed to continuing my studies in both Japanese and exercise science and will never forget my truly once-in-a-lifetime study abroad experience.
